Modelling Ghanaian road crash risk using the Manchester driver behaviour Questionnaire

Little is known about how well models of driver crash risks from the developed world apply to motoring in African low and middle income countries. The Manchester Driver Behaviour Questionnaire (DBQ; Reason et al., 1990), which distinguishes deliberate violations accepted safety practices unintentional errors its measurement risky driving has been demonstrated measure liability across a range cultures. However, applicability Africa currently unknown. present study examines psychometric properties DBQ sample 453 Ghanaian drivers. A combination exploratory confirmatory factor analyses produced 24 item 2-factor model with mainly violation items loading onto one error other. Both were independently correlated self-reported involvement traffic citations. Higher frequencies reported by than typically observed UK. findings are consistent usefulness characterising behaviours underlying risk Ghana. extent these may be targeted behavioural, enforcement engineering interventions discussed.
